Vatsat täynnä pannukakkua suuntasimme seuraavaksi katsomaan Vapaudenpatsasta. Ikävä kyllä Liberty Islandille, jolla Vapaudenpatsas sijaitsee, ei tällä hetkellä pääse lainkaan vierailemaan, koska saarella ei ole vielä korjattu hurrikaani Sandyn viime syksynä aiheuttamia tuhoja. Harmillista mutta eipä hätää: nousimme Manhattanin eteläkärjestä Staten Islandin lautalle, joka on siitä kätevä, että se kulkee läheltä Vapaudenpatsasta ja on ilmainen.
Mahtavaa patsastelua kelpasikin tarkkailla lautan kannelta:
- Katso Olivia, siinä se nyt on: Vapauden veistos! veisteli Alberto jälleen yhden puujalkavitsin.
- Pöhkö, se on Vapaudenpatsas, ja vapaus on niin arvokas asia, ettei sillä saa pelleillä, toruin minä siippaani.
Myös siirtolaismuseo Ellis Islandilla oli suljettu samasta syystä kuin Liberty Islandkin. Näimme kuitenkin myös Ellis Islandin museoineen lautalta.
Paluumatkalla saatoimme ihailla Manhattanin eteläkärkeä mereltä käsin.
Lauttamatkojen jälkeen emme olleet varsinaisesti vielä nälkäisiä, mutta emme osanneet vastustaa kojua, joka möi italialaista makkaraa. Paprikalla höystetty hot dog lämmitti tuulisessa ilmassa mainiosti.
New Yorkissa oli hämmentävän erinäköistä eri puolilla kaupunkia. Bowling Greenillä Etelä-Manhattanilla näytti tällaiselta:
Puistoa vastapäätä oli National Museum of the American Indian. Menimme tietenkin sisään.
Museossa sattui olemaan meneillään näyttely, jossa esiteltiin Amerikan alkuperäiskansojen edustajien uria populaarimusiikissa. Alberto oli tietenkin innoissaan, kun löysi Jimi Hendrixille kuuluvan esiintymisasun.
- En tiennytkään, että Hendrix oli intiaani, totesin hämmästyneenä Albertolle.
- Mikäli en ihan väärin muista, hän taisi olla neljännes-cherokee äitinsä puolelta, tuli Alberton vastaus kuin apteekin hyllyltä.
Tassuttelimme eteenpäin, kunnes yhtäkkiä huomasimme seisovamme kattoon ripustetun rumpusetin alla. Ihmettelimme asiaa tovin, kunnes Alberto valaistui opastaulun luettuaan:
- Ei mutta nämähän ovat Randy Castillon rummut!
- Randy kuka? oli minun pakko kysyä.
- Randy soitti aikoinaan monta vuotta Ozzy Osbournen bändissä ja sitten myöhemmin Mötley Crüessä, kuten bassorummun kalvosta näkyykin. Ikävä kyllä Randy siirtyi yläkerran orkesteriin jo kymmenen vuotta sitten, mutta rummut ovat täällä näköjään muistona.
Hetken rumpuja tarkasteltuaan Alberto tuskin pysyi enää housuissaan:
- Mamma mia! Nämähän ovat ihan keikkakunnossa - tuossa on tuplabasaripedaali, ja mikrofonitkin ovat paikoillaan tuolla tomi-rumpujen sisällä!
Museon perusnäyttelyssä oli hienoja esineitä eri intiaanikansoilta Etelä-Amerikasta inuiitteihin. Huomiota herättivät taitava käsityö ja kekseliäs - jopa välillä karmiva - materiaalien käyttö. Tämä taidokkaasti veistetty päähine oli koristeltu mm. eläimennahoilla.
Puhvelinnahkakin oli koristeltu näin komeasti:
Eräs museon kauneimmista esineistä oli lapselle tehty kantoväline, papoose.
Hurjempiakin esineitä oli näytteillä.
Mutta sitten näimme jotain, mikä näytti etäisesti tutulta.
- Katso, sehän on Lady Liberty! minä huudahdin, kun tunnistin nahasta tehdyn version Vapaudenpatsaasta.
Museon alakerrassa oli erilaisia tanssiasuja, ja tansseja oli myös mahdollista katsoa isolta valkokankaalta. Näimme mm. nuorten tyttöjen huivitanssin videolta ja siinä käytetyn asun vitriinissä.
Museovierailun jälkeen oli hampurilaisen vuoro. Olimme sitä mieltä, että ainakin yksi kunnon hampurilainen on matkan aikana syötävä. Lähdimme Hell's Kitcheniin etsimään Island Burgeria, jonka listaa oli kehuttu matkaoppaassa pitkäksi ja hampurilaisia hyviksi. Ulkoapäin paikka ei näyttänyt kovin erikoiselta...
... mutta menu oli toden totta pitkä ja herkullisen oloinen. Hampurilaiset oli luokiteltu tulisuuden mukaan. Pidän kyllä tulisesta, mutta en silti uskaltanut kokeilla tulisten hampurilaisten listalla erityisesti korostettua Napalm-nimistä hampurilaista. Onneksi löysin yllättävän nopeasti oman suosikkihampurilaiseni.
Ja oi kuinka herkullisia hampurilaisemme olivatkaan! Pihvi oli täydellinen ja juusto ihanasti sulanut sen päälle. Loput täytteet olivat sämpylän toisella puoliskolla. Ranskalaiset tulivat erillisessä astiassa ja limsan join pillillä lasipurkista.
Vaikka olimme molemmat täynnä syötyämme maukkaat hampurilaiset, Alberto ei voinut vastustaa kiusausta, kun näki pikkuruisen liikkeen, joka mainosti myyvänsä pizzapalan yhdellä dollarilla.
- Minun on pakko maistaa, millaista se on, hän touhotti.
- Sitten sinä vain puhut koko loppumatkan siitä, ettei se ollut edes oikeaa pizzaa, minä yritin turhaan vastustella.
Mutta kuinka ollakaan, yhden dollarin pizza osoittautui varsin maukkaaksi. Itse en sitä maistanut, mutta uskon Alberton näkemykseen.
Sitten oli aika käydä hoitamassa meille annettu tehtävä. Minua oli pyydetty tuomaan tuliaisiksi New York Rangersin tuotteita. Rangersin oman kaupan löytäminen tuntui olevan lähinnä mahdottomuus, mutta onneksi löysimme kaupan, joka möi kaikkien NHL-joukkueiden fanituotteita. Ystävällinen myyjä auttoi meitä jääkiekkoon perehtymättömiä karhuja löytämään etsimämme.
Paljosta kävelystä kipeytyneitä jalkoja on hauskinta hoitaa teatterissa. Niinpä suuntasimme illan tullen ensimmäiseen Broadway-musikaaliimme. Minä olin valinnut kaikista esityksistä Wickedin, sillä siinä ainakin on riittävästi taikuutta ja vihreyttä.
Teatterin aulassa - ja itse asiassa itse salissakin - saimme tavata lohikäärmeen, joka oli komea eikä tuntunut olevan harmissaan varsin pienestä - oikeastaan olemattomasta - osastaan itse näytelmässä.
Kuten arvata saattaa, Wicked oli elämys. Pääosan esittäjä Willemijn Verkaik on esittänyt Elphaban roolin yli 1000 (luitte oikein) kertaa, joten hänellä oli rooli hallussa. Mutta mainio oli myös toinen pääosan esittäjä Tiffany Haas, joka paikkasi jotakuta toista Glindan roolissa.

Lady Liberty and the green woman
I had been dreaming of having pancakes as breakfast long before our trip to New York, so one morning we entered the nice diner next to our hotel and ordered their pancake breakfast. I had mine with strawberries while Alberto had his with bacon. The portions were so enormous that I couldn't finish mine.
Stuffed with pancakes we waddled towards the south end of Manhattan to see the Statue of Liberty. Unfortunately the Liberty Island, where the statue stands, was still closed because of the damages caused by Sandy the storm. However, we did have a plan B: we boarded the Staten Island ferry that not only was free but whose route also took us close to the statue. We also got to see the Ellis Island that was closed due to the same reason as the Liberty Island. And on our return trip we managed to catch a magnificent view over Manhattan from the sea.
After the ferry ride we stopped to have hot dogs from a stand that was selling Italian sausage. The spicy hot hog warmed nicely in the windy weather.
Then it was time to explore the Native American heritage in the National Museum of the American Indian. We were happy to discover that they had a special exhibition about the native musicians in popular culture. Alberto was so anxious when he found the patchwork leather jacket that had belonged to Jimi Hendrix.
- I didn't know Mr. Hendrix was an Indian, I said to Alberto.
- If I recall it correctly, he was one quarter of a Cherokee on his mother's side, was Alberto's encyclopedic answer.
We paddled a bit further until we found ourselves under a drum kit that was hanging from the roof. We wondered it for a while until Alberto savvied to read the sign on the wall.
- Oh my, these are the drums of Randy Castillo!
- Randy who? I had to ask
- Randy was playing with Ozzy Osbourne for years and then went on to join Mötley Crüe later on, as you can see from the head of his bass drum. Too bad Randy joined the heavenly orchestra ten years ago already, but looks like his legacy lives on here with his drums.
After inspecting the drum kit very closely Alberto concluded:
- Mamma mia! This kit is in a "ready for a gig" condition. Look, the double-bass drum pedal has been attached and the Sennheiser microphones are on their places within the tom toms.
The museum had also lots of beautiful objects from South America all the way to Alaska in their permanent exhibition. Many decorative leather works were on display, and we learned a lot about the use of other materials as well. We also saw something that looked very familiar:
- Look, Alberto, it is the Lady Liberty - made from leather!
In downstairs they had an exhibition of various ritual and dancing outfits and some of the dances were shown on the video screen as well.
After the visit to the museum it was time for a late lunch - or an early dinner. We decided that now it was high time for us to have proper American burgers. Our travel guide recommended a place called Island Burger in Hell's Kitchen and that's where we went. I have to admit, that from outside the place didn't make much of an impression, but once you were sitting on the table looking at the menu, you knew that you had come to the right place. I have never seen so long list of burgers, classified according to their hotness - one really wonders what a burger called "Napalm" would be like... Needless to say that the burgers were very, very tasty, too.
On our way back Alberto couldn't resist the temptation when he saw a tiny shop that was selling one dollar pizza slices.
- I have to try out one of those! he said. - I just want to know what a one dollar pizza will taste like!
- Oh dear, and then you keep on nagging that it was not as good as the real Italian pizza, I tried to cool him off.
However, to our surprise, the one dollar pizza was not that bad at all - it was much better than what they sell as pizza in Finland with much higher price tag.
I had been asked to bring some fan products of the New York Rangers ice hockey team as a souvenir, so we decided to take care of that next. We managed to find an NHL fan shop and with the little help from a shop assistant we were able to get what we were supposed to.
After so much walking we decided to rest our paws for a while - in a theater. It was time for our first Broadway musical experience. It is hardly surprising that I had chosen my old favorite "Wicked" as a suitable show to lose our Broadway virginity for. And it is even less surprising that we enjoyed it a lot - the leading lady Willemijn Verkaik has appeared as Elphaba for more than a thousand times (yes, you read it correctly) already, so she had really made the role her own. What an experience!
