- Jan Guilloun Arn-kirjasarjassa on ainakin kuningattaria, Freija sanoi.
- No, ehkäpä ne kelpaavat, jos ei prinsessoja ole saatavilla, Victoria totesi.
- Siinä on myös temppeliritareita, Freija totesi ovela ilme kasvoillaan.
Silloin näin, kuinka Albertokin alkoi innostua lukupiiristämme.
Kirjat oli pian luettu ja saatoimme kokoontua keskustelemaan niistä. Victorialla varsinkin oli teräviä havaintoja kirjoissa esiintyvistä kuningattarista ja aatelisneidoista. Pian Freija ja Alberto alkoivat pohtia, että olisi mielenkiintoista nähdä tarinan tapahtumapaikat Ruotsin Länsi-Götanmaalla.
- Tälle kesälle ei olekaan vielä lomamatkaa suunnitteilla, joten voisimme suunnata Arnin maisemiin vaikka heti, innostui Alberto.
- Ne paikat taitavat vain olla sen verran syrjässä, ettei niihin pääse julkisilla kulkuvälineillä, totesin hieman huolestuneena.
- Me voisimme tällä kertaa tavoistamme poiketen lähteä matkaan omalla autolla. Silloin pääsemme juuri sinne minne haluamme, vakuutteli Alberto.
- Mutta uskaltaako siellä Ruotsissa ajaa? kysyin vieläkin epäileväisenä. - Sehän on ulkomailla!
- No eihän se nyt sentään mikään Napoli ole, naureskeli Alberto vastaukseksi. - Sitä paitsi, jos lähdemme autolla, voimme ottaa myös Viivin mukaan.
- Siinä tapauksessa mekin lähdemme mukaan, huusivat Viktoria ja Freija yhteen ääneen.
Tuumasta siis toimeen. Kun Viktoria ja Freija saivat kotoa luvat lähteä mukaan, alkoi uuttera matkakassan kerääminen. Viktoria säästi matkarahansa viikkorahoistaan. Freija puolestaan tienasi omansa auttamalla siskojaan Gothia ja Titä vaatesuunnittelu- ja ompelutöissä. Molemmat tytöt saivat myös hieman matkarahaa vanhemmiltaan.
Kun rahoitus oli kunnossa, aloimme suunnitella varsinaista matkareittiä. Alberto levitti kartan suurieleisesti keittiömme pöydälle.
- Mutta Alberto-setä, tämä karttahan on ikivanha. Itse asiassa sitä vanhempaa karttaa ei Skandinaviasta olekaan, sillä se on Carta Marina vuodelta 1539, ihmetteli Freija Alberton kartan nähdessään.
- Ikävä kyllä minulla ei ole uudempaakaan, ja kyllähän tästä suurinpiirtein näkee, mihin olemme menossa. Suurimmat kaupungitkin tähän on merkitty - tai siis sellaiset kaupungit ja paikat, jotka olivat olemassa jo silloin Arnin aikaan, puolusteli Alberto.
- Taitaa tulla siis melko keskiaikainen reissu, totesi Freija - eikä arvannutkaan, kuinka oikeassa lopulta oli.
Kun kerran olimme liikkeellä autolla, päätimme samantien kierrellä eteläistä Ruotsia vähän laajemminkin. Minä halusin nimittäin ehdottomasti käydä Skånessa sekä Itämeren saarilla Öölannissa ja keskiaikaisia kirkkoja täynnä olevassa Gotlannissa. Reissusta tulisi siis melko pitkä, joten mukaan piti varata kaikenlaista, kuten majoitusvälineet ja kuivamuonaa, sillä päätimme säästää yöpymällä useimmiten retkeilymajoissa tai leirintäalueilla.
Lähtöpäivän koittaessa kokoonnuimme saliin ja tarkistimme, että kaikki tulisi varmasti mukaan. Annoimme myös kotimieheksi jäävälle pikkupupulle tarkat ohjeet siitä, miten taloutta piti hoitaa poissaollessamme.
Ja niin matka alkoi. Ajoimme ensiksi Turkuun, jossa nousimme Tukholmaan vievään laivaan. Laivan irtautuessa satamasta kävimme tyttöjen kanssa laivan kannella vilkuttamassa Suomelle hyvästiksi.
Sen jälkeen olikin vuorossa laivamatkan tärkein vaihe - matkakarkkien ostaminen laivan tax free -myymälästä. Meidän piti tosin hieman jarrutella lapsia, etteivät he tuhlanneet kaikkia rahojaan jo menomatkalla. Ja täytyy myöntää, että minäkin olin innoissani kaikkien legendaaristen laivakarkkien äärellä.
Ostosten jälkeen piti käydä yöpuulle, sillä laiva saapuisi Tukholman satamaan aikaisin aamulla ja tarkoituksemme oli jatkaa siitä matkaa heti kohti ensimmäisiä seikkailuja, joista kuulette lisää seuraavalla kerralla.

The Knights Templar and fair maidens are awaiting!
Since the beginning of their summer holidays Victoria and Freya have been visiting us almost daily to play with Vivian. On one of those visits Victoria proposed that we should read some Swedish literature together. I liked the idea immediately and suggested that we could read "Ronia the Robber's Daughter" but Victoria seemed to prefer something a bit more romantic with princesses and fair maidens.
- Jan Guillou's Arn The Knight Templar trilogy at least has some queens in it, noted Freya.
- Well, maybe that's fine if the real princesses are not available, agreed Victoria.
Freya's notion about the Knights Templar also woke up Alberto's interest and he wanted to join our reading crusade. The books were read quite soon and we gathered together to discuss about them. Victoria had some remarkable insights about the queens and noble maidens appearing in the story where as Alberto and Freya soon turned the discussion towards the places mentioned in the books.
- It would be interesting to see all those places in Västergötland in Sweden, Freya said.
- We don't have any plans for a holiday trip for this summer so far, so maybe we should take a road trip there to see where Arn lived back in the 12th century, Alberto started thinking.
- But is it safe to drive there? I asked worryingly.
- My darling, we are talking about Sweden - not Naples, laughed Alberto.
- And if we are going by our own car, we can take Vivian with us as well.
- In that case we're coming too, shouted Victoria and Freya in unison.
When Victoria's and Freya's parents agreed that the girls can indeed join us for the road trip we started to plan the details. Alberto spread a map on our kitchen table and we all gathered around it.
- But Uncle Alberto, your map is very old! Freya cried once she saw the map. - Actually it is the oldest possible map of Scandinavia, Carta Marina from year 1539!
- Unfortunately I don't have any more contemporary one but I am sure this will do. Look, all the major towns have been marked on it - or at least those that existed back in Arn's time, Alberto replied.
- Oh well, it's going to get really medieval, Freya murmured without knowing how accurate her prediction turned out to be.
As we were going by car we decided to take a good look around the southern Sweden, visiting Skåne and the islands of Öland and Gotland on the Baltic Sea. It was going to be a long journey and therefore we needed to take a lot of stuff with us. When day of departure finally arrived, we gathered in our living room to check that we had all we needed and instructed our little rabbit friend how to run the household while we were away.
And so it did begin. The first leg of our trip took us to Turku where we boarded a ferry that was about to take us to Stockholm. When the ship departed from the harbor, we went to the sun deck to bid our farewell to Finland. After that it was time for our most important task on board - to buy the sweets from the tax free market. The girls were so excited that we needed to calm them down a little bit so that they didn't spend all their money at once. Once the sweets were purchased, it was time for bed - it was going to be an early start in Stockholm for the adventures that were waiting for us in Sweden...
