- No, meidän onneksemme BBC:n ääniteknikot hallitsivat laadukkaan stereoäänittämisen salat jo 1970-luvulla, vastasi Alberto.

Making a movie, part 4 – Post-production

Alberto started the post-production of Victoria’s and Freya’s movie immediately after we had completed the principal photography. As we had pre-planned everything carefully, the post-production turned out to proceed rather smoothly. Once Alberto had checked out the material we had shot and recorded, he quickly assembled a rough cut so that we could see that there was no need to re-shoot scenes and that only minor parts of dialogue needed to be looped.

Victoria and Freya were present when Alberto edited the final cut of the film. This was carried out – like so many other tasks during the production – homely around our kitchen table. However, Freya was wondering one thing:
- Uncle Alberto, why are you not using a computer workstation for editing like others are doing nowadays?
- I guess I am a bit old-fashioned but I do like working traditional ways. And this way we get more authentic look and feel of an old horror flick.

Once the editing had been completed, we went on to work with the soundtrack. Alberto composed and recorded some music and quite a few sound effects for the film in his home studio. The more demanding effects, like wind and thunder, were taken from old BBC FX discs that Alberto had got as a gift from a friend a long time ago.
- I never believed that there would be some real use for these, said Alberto.
- It is surprising how good and authentic these old effect records do sound, commented Freya.
- Well, it is our luck that the engineers at the BBC mastered the secrets of stereophonic recording already back in the 70s, answered Alberto.

And finally it was time for the long-awaited moment: the 16mm projection print of the film arrived back from the lab. We invited everyone how had been involved in the project to a premiere held in our home. According to Victoria’s demand, we spread the red carpet at our door and Magnus Björhufvud was taking photos of Victoria and Freya when they were posing on it in front of a poster designed by Goth and Tic. Ingrid and I prepared huge bowls of pop-corn and lots of juice while Alberto was loading the film into his trusty old projector. When everyone had sat down, we turned off the lights, Alberto started the projector and we all got enchanted by the magic of the moving pictures – this time created completely by our own paws.

Making a movie, part 3 – Principal Photography

Finally we were able to start shooting. Alberto had spent the beginning of the week by cleaning up the lenses, loading up the film and oiling the moving parts in his cameras and reel-to-reel recorder. Building the set was completed on our attic on Thursday evening and I spent the Friday morning by washing and ironing the costumes while Goth and Tic were decorating the set.

As one also gets hungry while working on the set, we invited Victoria’s mother, Ingrid Björnhufvud, to take care of the catering.
- I think I will serve stuffed rolls and baguettes, she explained when she blew into our kitchen. – There will be also some fruits and snacks available and lots of juice. Does anyone have any allergies?
- Not that I know of, I answered and was happy that we could leave the catering matters into the capable paws of Ingrid.

We started shooting immediately when Alberto had come back home from work. Working on the set was disciplined and everybody had a task of his or her own. As Victoria, Freya and Alberto had to perform for the camera, it fell on me to keep all strings in my paws during the shoot and assume the responsibilities of a producer and a director. Alberto worked as director of photography on those scenes where he didn't act himself and I took care of the photography when he did. Goth and Tic were responsible for the make-up, Magnus Björnhufvud for lightning and our little rabbit friend for the sound recording.

The hectic schedule prevailed the whole weekend but we still managed to get everything in the can by the Sunday evening. As we were shooting the final scene, Victoria decided to play a joke on Alberto:
- Look, it’s Count Dracula! Victoria said.
- Oh dear, replied Freya.
- I never drink… wine, Alberto delivered probably the most famous line of Dracula.
- But Uncle Alberto, that’s not true! chuckled Victoria, making the whole crew to laugh hysterically. We had to take several takes before everyone was able to keep their snouts straight through the whole scene again.

- Tottakai, Victoria sanoi vakavana.

Alberto ehdotti.
- Meillä on silloin juhannussalon rakennusta, Victoria totesi.
- Entäs seuraava päivä?
- Minulla on silloin lasimaalauskurssi, Freija sanoi.
- Entäs sitten tämä päivä? Alberto sanoi osoittaen tassullaan kalenteria.

Tytöt eivät kuitenkaan osanneet päättää, haluavatko he mieluummin vanhan mustavalkoisen elokuvan vai Hammerin goottilaisempaa tunnelmaa, joten päädyimme kuvaamaan super16mm-filmille open matte -tekniikalla, jolloin voimme jälkituotannossa rajata kuvan haluamallamme tavalla.

Making a movie, part 2 – Production design

Once the script was completed, Victoria and Freya were keen to proceed to the principal photography immediately:
- Can we start shooting now, Uncle Alberto?
- Look, children, we still have a lot to do before we can start shooting. We need to define the shooting schedule, cast the actors, find the locations, build the set and prepare the costumes and props, replied Alberto.

As there indeed were so many things to do, we decided to divide the labor of production design so that everyone had a task of her or his own to take care of. Finding the suitable location appeared to be quite challenging first, until I got an idea:
- We could build the set of the Castle Dracula in our attic! We need to clean up there a bit first, though…
- That’s a great idea, agreed Alberto. – As for the exterior shots of the castle we can use some archive footage I have shot on our travels.

We had long discussions about the casting until we settled with having Victoria and Freya as the princesses and Alberto as Dracula – he got the part because he already happened to have an authentic-looking Dracula costume with a cloak.

We were lucky to get help with the sets and costumes from Freya’s sisters Goth and Tic. They are studying architecture so it didn’t take them long to come up with the set design. As our budget was very tight, finding the building material for the set proved to be somewhat troublesome at first. The problem was solved by Victoria’s father Magnus Björnhufvud who brought a huge piece of cardboard he had rescued from the recycle bin at his work place. Magnus also ended up building the set with Alberto. Freya was overlooking their work according to the instructions she had received from her sisters.

Goth and Tic are also capable fashion designers and dressmakers, so they were the key resource to realize Victoria’s grandiose visions about the costumes:
- Look, I draw a picture of the princess’ dress for you to consider, Victoria said when she handed the sketch.
- I see that there is a very detailed picture of the crown, said Goth smiling after studying the drawing.
- But of course, the crown of a princess can’t be just like anything, Victoria replied.

While the girls were creating the costumes with Goth and Tic, I made the list of all props we need and began to search for them. As Catholic bears we did of course have a few crucifixes already and I also managed to purchase almost a brand new coffin for Count Dracula with a bargain price from a second-hand shop. Goth and Tic helped me to fix a few marks of wear and tear on it and re-attire it with red velvet.

The most demanding task in production design was coming up with the shooting plan and schedule. We knew that we could afford only a few days for the principal photography so we needed to plan ahead very carefully what to shoot and when. With a little bit of luck and adjustments we finally managed to fit the whole shoot around one pro-longed weekend. We also planned one extra day a bit later on for shooting pick-up and additional footage if needed.

Alberto was assigned to take care of all required technical aspects of the production. He spent quite a few days in his studio sorting out equipment and figuring out what to use to capture the sight and sound.
- We could shoot with Techniscope system using 2-perf 35mm film. That way we can save 50% on film-stock expenses and get authentic Hammer Film widescreen look and film, he calculated for us.

The girls, however, couldn’t make up their minds about whether they wanted an old-fashioned black and white movie or Hammer’s more gothic style, so we ended up shooting with super16mm in open-matte in order to retain free paws for cropping and grading the image in the post-production.

- Alberto-setä, sinullahan on elokuvakamera? Victoria kysyi heti ovesta sisään päästyään.
- Itse asiassa minulla on niitä useampiakin... Alberto vastasi hieman hämillään.
- Me halutaan tehdä elokuva! Voisitko kuvata sen meille? Freija touhotti innoissaan.

Tarinan lopussa prinsessat onnistuvat kukistamaan Draculan krusifiksia näyttämällä.

Making a movie, part 1 – From an idea to a script

It was a few months ago when the daughter of our neighbours, Victoria Björnhufvud, and her friend Freya were knocking at our door anxiously. We first thought they were coming to play with Vivian but it soon turned out that they actually had some business with Alberto.

- Uncle Alberto, do you have a movie camera? asked Victoria immediately when they were let in.
- Actually I have quite a few of them... was Alberto's shy answer.
- We want to make a movie! Can you shoot it for us?
- What kind of a project are you talking about? asked Alberto with growing interest.

We found out that the girls were expected to read some classic novel for their literary class at school. They had found Bram Stoker's Dracula from the bookshelf of Freya's sisters Goth and Tic and got so excited about it that they wanted to make a movie of their own based on the book.

The kids would have like to start to shoot the film immediately but Alberto was pulling the brake:
- We can't just go on and shoot without having a screenplay first. We need the script to see what kind of scenes we need to shoot and what kind of locations, sets and props we need.

Alberto was getting excited, too, and I found my own interest emerging as well. It didn't take long until I volunteered to help the girls with the script as I do have some previous experience on dramatisation.

- Dracula is such an epic novel that unfortunately we do not have resources to cover the whole story with the shoe-string budget we have. Therefore we have to adapt the story by figuring out what are its essential themes, plot development and characters. Then we need to cut away anything else as the script must be tight – there shall be no idle moments in our movie and every detail must have substantial meaning.
- But there are so many cool things happening in many places and to many people, lamented Victoria.
- No worry, dear, we can change things to happen in different places, remove and merge characters and even invent new ones, if we need, I comforted her.

So far so good. As Victoria and Freya were so excited about Mina and Lucy, the young ladies of the story, we decided to tell the story from their point of view. It didn't take long for Victoria and Freya to learn the trade of adapting a story for a script – they were soon setting themselves free from the original.
- Could Mina and Lucy be princesses who are living in the Castle Dracula? they asked.
- Well, why not, I replied. - In that case we can write more scenes to take place in the castle itself which means we can cut corners by using the same set most of the time.
- Could there also be a fantasy or dream sequence with an unicorn? suggested Alberto.
- My dear, you are just hopeless! This is an adaptation of a novel by Bram Stoker, not by Philip K. Dick, I answered.

We wrote several drafts of the screenplay over the next few weeks and held reading sessions every now and then in order to see how things were developing, what did work and what not and how long the scenes were. In the final version of the script the princesses Mina and Lucy move in to the castle where its ex-landlord, Count Dracula, is still lodging in the basement. At the end of the story princesses manage to vanquish the Count by showing him a crucifix.

We were very proud of our script. It was compact and every scene was carrying the story onwards. The next big thing waiting for us would be the production design and pre-production.

Elokuun lopulla suuntasimme Turkuun.

The Barbarian Show piti puolestaan sisällään mitä ihmeellisimpiä hevosen selässä tehtyjä temppuja.

We know what we did last summer

The autumn is coming so it is high time to take a look back at the things we did this summer – indeed, we didn't spend all summer traveling, even if it may appear so according to the recent blog entries.

As you remember, we started our summer by visiting a miniature fair in Lahti. Freya asked us to bring her a dog from Hanna's kennel and that's what we promptly did. It didn't take long until Freya popped in to fetch her new pet who she named Odin.

Victoria and her dog were accompanying Freya and the girls decided to take their dogs for a walk immediately. Vivian wanted to join them, but this turned out to be a bit troublesome: it is not necessarily easy task to figure out which one of our dogs she should have taken with, as she's too young to take them all at the same time. So after some debate we decided that it was still probably better to take Vivian to lay on the sandbox with a friendly hedgehog while Victoria and Freya were walking the dogs.

Once the girls got back from the walk, we gathered in our living room to try out Vivian's new skateboard. As Vivian was too small to kick the boards herself, Victoria and Freya decided to help her by pushing her around on the board. I was a bit terrified first but then relaxed as I saw that everything went smoothly.

During the summer we also managed to catch a good number of concerts and pieces of musical theatre. One of the more special events was the concert of Uriah Heep Legends, a one-night stand of no less than three ex-Heep members. I could recognize only two of their songs but it didn't hurt at all as the band rocked really hard.

There is an annual skiffle festival in the nearby municipality of Hankasalmi and this year a few friends of Alberto had a gig there. Dubbing their stage act as Maria & The Berry Pickers, Maria, Timo, Jarmo, Valtteri and Matti played a random selection of more or less known songs, including one of our favorites, "Hijo de la Luna". A few weeks later we also got to see Maria, Timo and Valtteri performing in a summer theater piece called "Tukkijoella", which a famous Finnish play about romantic lumberjack life.

At the end of August we made yet another trip to Turku to see the double-bill of two most popular Finnish female rock and pop artists when Maija Vilkkumaa and Jenni Vartiainen were performing in a party held in the castle park. It was the final show for Maija and her current band, so it was quite an emotional moment and the musicians really let it shine.

Jenni Vartiainen was just as cozy and sympathetic as ever. At the end of the show we even got to witness something extremely rare indeed, as Maija and Jenni got together to perform two encore pieces, one from Maija's and one from Jenni's repertoire.

On the way back home we stopped in Hämeenlinna to visit the medieval fair there. There were plenty of medieval action to see there, like a tournament, the barbarian horse show and some interesting re-enactments of old fighting techniques presented by the boys (and a lady) of the Warusseppäin Kilta.

One of the highlights of the summer was the performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber's and Tim Rice's "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Sibelius Hall in Lahti. Hannu Lepola and Maria Ylipää were just perfect choices for parts of Jesus and Maria Magdalena - we were very impressed.

We also managed to complete one huge project with Victoria and Freya during the summer - more about this next time!
