New Yorkin viimeiset kiusaukset

Kahtena viimeisenä matkapäivänämme New Yorkissa ehdimme vielä nähdä yhtä sun toista.

Chewbaccan maskin sekä elokuvassa The Mask käytetyn vihreän maskin.

Minä olin tietenkin innoissani, kun näin suosikkinäytelijäni Kate Winsletin Mildred Pierce -sarjassa käyttämän asun. Oikealla on puolestaan samasta sarjasta asu, jota on käyttänyt Mildredin tytärtä näytellyt Evan Rachel Wood.

Alberto oli ymmärrettävästi enemmän innoissaan nähdessään täydellisen Star Wars -figuurikokoelman.

- Etkös sinäkin leikkinyt näillä pentuna silloin 80-luvulla? kysyin häneltä.
- Minähän leikin niillä aina silloin tällöin vieläkin! Minulla onkin näistä aika monta, vaikkei kokoelmani ihan näin täydellinen olekaan, Alberto selitti polleana.

Myös Star Trek -esineet pysäyttivät Alberton vitriinin ääreen.
- Spock on ehdoton suosikkini Star Trekin hahmoista, vaikkei tassuni koskaan ole koskaan oikein taipunut vulkanilaiseen tervehdykseen, Alberto totesi.
- No hassut korvat hänellä ainakin on, totesin minä puolestani.

Seuraavalta osastolta löytyi ihania vanhoja videopelejä.
- Tätä pelasin pienenä karhuna! huudahdin syöksyessäni kokeilemaan, kuinka peli sujuisi. - Olin aikoinani näissä aika hyvä, onnistuin usein pelaamaan jopa puolikin tuntia ihan muutamalla liiralla.

Sain todeta, että taitoni olivat hieman ruostuneet. Space Invaders ei sujunut ollenkaan, enkä päässyt Donkey Kongissakaan edes ensimmäistä kertaa ylös gorillan luo.

Elokuvamuseo oli oikein hauska paikka, sillä siellä sai edellä esitellyn lisäksi kokeilla kaikenlaista elokuvantekoon liittyvää itse. Albertokin kokeili dubata Babe - urhea possu -elokuvaa.

Illan koittaessa ajoimme metrolla Times Squarelle.

Kuten varmaan arvaatte, tarkoituksemme ei ollut ainoastaan ihastella valtavaa mainosvalojen määrää, vaan olimme menossa jälleen teatteriin. Paikan päällä ollessamme olimme nimittäin havahtuneet siihen tosiasiaan, ettei yksi Broadway-musikaali vain ole tarpeeksi. Niinpä olimme käyneet hakemassa liput Spiderman - Turn off the Dark -musikaaliin.

Siellä sijaitsee nimittäin The Cloisters, keskiaikaisten esineiden museo. Matkalla museolle nappasimme aamiaiseksi perinteiset hotdogit aidosta hodarikojusta.

Kävelimme The Cloistersiin viehättävän puiston halki. Matka tuntui pitkältä, mutta sitten The Cloisters häämötti puiden takaa.

Ehdottomasti hienointa minusta olivat noin 500 vuotta vanhat yksisarviskuvakudokset.

Seuraavalla kerralla saatte viimeinkin kuulla kotoisammista aiheista - vaikkakin me muistelemme New Yorkia vielä pitkään.

Last Temptations of New York

Our wonderful holiday in New York was nearing its end but we still managed to catch a lot of things over the last day and a half.

We may not be true fans of the Beatles but nonetheless we couldn't skip seeing the famous Dakota Building on the 72th st. It was in front of this very building where John Lennon had the fatal encounter with Mark Chapman back in December 1980. A section of the nearby Central Park has been dedicated to the memory of Mr. Lennon and has been appropriately titled as Strawberry Field after that famous song.

I am usually the shop-a-holic in our family but during this holiday trip Alberto really out-did himself. The main reason for this was our visit to B & H Photo, the largest non-chain photo and video equipment store in the US, in the corner of 34th Street and 9th Avenue. It is regarded as the best store of its kind in the world, and it is easy to see why. Alberto was so excited that it was nearly impossible to get him out of their camera department. When we finally got out of the store, Alberto has spent more than $300 for all kinds of camera accessories - and still he considered them as a bargain!

Then it was time to navigate our way through the subway system onto the shores of Brooklyn again.
- Getting to understand the subway network here is a bit of an effort, I complained.
- Yeah, it is much more complex than the one in London, for instance, Alberto agreed. - It's not just about the color but also the exact number of the line and whether it is a local or an express train.
- Also the signs on the platforms leave a lot to desire, I added to that.

After a short train ride we found ourselves queuing for pizza in front of Grimaldi's near the Brooklyn Park. As we had heard that Grimaldi's is the best pizzeria in the NYC, we had to try it out, of course. We tried to get there during the more quiet hours but still had to wait for a while before we got the table. We ended up sharing a large pizza with Italian sausage, olives and mushrooms and drank local cherry soda.

After the pizza it was time for the third borough of New York for the day as we moved to Queens to visit the Museum of the Moving Image. Alberto got excited again when he discovered the exhibition of old movie cameras and started one of endless monologues:
- Look at this fine piece of cinematographic equipment, my dear Olivia. This is an original Technicolor movie camera from the 1930s that was used for many classics of the era, like The Wizard of Oz, for example. In this system, each main color was exposed to its own piece of film which were brought together then in the post-production. This process results the excellent colors but also has the drawback of...
- Oh Alberto, can we just move on - this is a huge museum and we still have a lot to see here, I urged my hubby as I didn't want to stay the whole day there listening to his lecture.

And there indeed was a lot to see. Not only old movie making equipment but also some old friends like master Yoda.
- May the force be with you, Alberto bid his farewell to the old Jedi master when we moved on.

The exhibition also included a good selection of various masks and costumes used in various movies. My favorites were the two dresses worn by Kate Winslet and Evan Rachel Wood in HBO's television series of Mildred Pierce. Hardly surprising, Alberto was much more interested in the complete collection of Star Ward figures.
- Did you play with these when you were a kid back in 80s? I asked him.
- Oh, I still do play with them every now and then! I had a good number of these, even if my collection was not as perfect as this one here...

To Alberto's further joy, there was also some Star Trek related toys on display as well.
- Mr. Spock is my all-time favorite among the crew of USS Enterprise. Too bad I never managed to twist my paw into the real Vulcan salute, Alberto kept going with his nostalgia.
- And really funny ears he has, too, I commented on that.

But the real treasure of oldies but goodies was found next - a room full of video games from the early 80s.
- I played these when I was a young pup, I bursted out when I hurried to try them out. - I was actually so good that I often managed to carry on more than half an hour with just a handful of lire.

However, it turned out that my arcade skill were not aged all that gracefully. After failing miserably with the Space Invaders and being unable to reach the Gorilla even once in the Donkey Kong, I saw it fit to quit without further ado.

The Museum of the Moving Image really was a fun place. Not only did they have a lot of interesting paraphernalia on display but one could also try out various film making task hands-on. Alberto did some dubbing for that touching piggy movie Babe. We also got to make the Monty Python like stop-motion animations of our own. Too bad my animation got lost somewhere into the depths of the internet. It was, however, a cinematic masterpiece about a WV beetle that was abducted by aliens. Alberto's movie was quite sympathetic, too, and he put it into the YouTube so that you can check it out.

The evening was falling quickly and we had to leave to make our next appointment - which was with Mr. Spiderman on the Times Square. After seeing Wicked on Wednesday, it quickly dawned to us that one Broadway musical just was not enough but we had to catch another one while we could. Therefore we had booked tickets for Spiderman - Turn of the Dark for Friday.

Spiderman probably didn't top Wicked as one of my favorite musicals but it was great fun nonetheless. The sequences where the actors were flying high over the heads of the audience were just incredible. Spidey even landed on the rail of the balcony and greeted the people sitting in the front row there!

The next day was then the final one for our trip. We still had plenty of time before we had to leave for the airport, so we decided to explore the yet uncharted NYC territory for us - the north end of the island of Manhattan. Our main interest in that area was The Cloisters that host the medieval collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts. On our way there we had hot dogs from a street stand as breakfasts.

The Cloisters is situated on a hill in the middle of charming Fort Tryon Park. We took the long walk through the park and finally saw The Cloisters appearing from behind the trees. The building itself looked like quite medieval was somewhat out-of-place within the busy surroundings of the city.

The medieval collection itself was moderately sized but still amazing. My favorites were the Flemish tapestries depicting The hunt of the Unicorn. They were in excellent condition considering their age and the Unicorn was quite touching creature indeed. Alberto's favorite was the chapel room with real medieval atmosphere.

Unfortunately our times in New York finally came to end and we had to start to make it back home. When leaving The Cloisters, we did re-cross the park but took a shorter road down the hill side. The path down was quite narrow and every now and then there were mysterious little stairs that were leading to some hidden place within the park. We also met a funny squirrel with whom we stopped to talk for a while until we had to continue our trip back to the JFK airport and to home.

Melkein koko Manhattan yhdessä päivässä

Kun Alberto esitteli suunnitelmansa seuravaavan New Yorkin -päivämme ohjelmaksi, olin ensin pyörtyä.

- Ensinkö me menemme sinne Grand Central Stationille? minä kysyin.
- Rakas Olivia, emme me mene sinne lainkaan, sillä vaikka sen nimi on asema, se on itse asiassa posti, Alberto valisti minua.
Suuntasimme siis Grand Central Terminalille, joka on New Yorkin päärautatieasema.

- Kerrassaan ovelaa! totesi Alberto ihastellen.

The Pierpont Morgan Libraryn kirjastohuoneeseen olisi voinut jäädä vaikka asumaan, mutta jatkoimme matkaamme kohti etelää pitkin 4. Avenueta. Hetken kuluttua näimme tutun oloisen rakennuksen naapurikorttelissa.
- Katso, Olivia, se on Empire State Building!

Tosin amerikkalaistyyliset paloportaat eivät vaikuttaneet kovin napolilaisilta.

Pitkällisen tassuttelun jälkeen kaipasimme hieman herkuttelua. Niinpä pysähdyimme Little Italyn tunnetuimpaan kahvilaan nimeltä Ferrara.

- Luultavasti niiden raja on tuossa, Alberto vastasi.

- Miksi? Alberto ihmetteli ja aikoi ensin tassuttaa eteenpäin.
- Tämän mutkan nimi on Bloody Angle, koska täällä gangsterit väijyivät toisiaan, minä selitin.
- Milloin?
- 1920-luvulla.
- Olisivatkohan he sitten ehtineet jo toisiin maisemiin?

Valtavalla rakennustyömaalla nousi jo melko korkealle uusi One World Trade Center -pilvenpiirtäjä.

Most of Manhattan - in one day

When Alberto presented his plan for our fifth day in New York, I nearly fainted. He was sure that we could see almost all of Manhattan within one day. I had my doubts but it turned out to be that Alberto's plan was not bad at all.

Like in all previous days, we started with s short ride in NYC subway system. The subway stations provide often excellent opportunities to enjoy some art and culture, like the mosaics of Alice in Wonderland or the archaic country music from the mountains performed by the highly talented fellows of the Ebony Hillbillies.

- So, we are starting from the Grand Central Station, the main railway station? I asked.
- Dear Olivia, you've got the places a bit mixed up. Despite its name, Grand Central Station is not a railway station but the main post office, Alberto corrected.

So we entered Grand Central Terminal instead. We learned from the travel guide that the magnificent building not only looks monumental but also hosts total of 44 platforms, making it largest in the world on that measure.

From the Grand Central Terminal we continued towards the bank of the East River.
- Let's go to see where they are storing the world peace, Alberto blurted yet another bad joke.
Once I saw the building of the United Nations, I had to say:
- I think the world peace would be needed somewhere else, too.
The protesters on the other side of the street apparently shared my sentiments.

It would have been possible to visit the headquarters of the UN - it could have been exciting as the building is technically located on no-mans-land - but we decided to head for the NYC Public Library. It was easy to find, as the way was marked up with "Library Way" signs and literary quotes on the pavement.

The library building was just amazing with its guardian lions. However, inside its rugged façade there was a homely atmosphere with a hint of scholarship and dignity. It was a perfect milieu for our old and beloved friends, who were lodging in a showcase in the Children's Center. It has been a while since Christopher Robin was playing with Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and others but they seemed to enjoy their retirement among the new generations of children.

Alberto had also planned a visit to another library, too. The Pierpont Morgan Library, however, was something completely different than the NYC Public Library. Basically it had been a private library of a very wealthy gentleman, hosting his large collection of old manuscripts and a study room. The study was furnished with red tapestries, mattress and comfy chairs and there were expensive works of the renaissance art hanging on the all - Mr. Morgan had really created an environment worth the manuscripts he was studying there.

However, even all that didn't prepare us for what was waiting us in the library room itself. It was huge and had bookshelves on three stories, all full of precious old illuminated manuscripts and books. After a while, we started to wonder one thing:
- How does one access the books on the second and third level? There are no stairs or ladders or anything?
A helpful museum assistant provided us with an answer upon asking. It turned out that one of the shelves on the first level was actually a doorway to the hidden staircase behind the wall. How charming!

We could have made Mr. Morgan's library as our new home but decided to move on southwards along the 4th Avenue. After a while we spotted a familiar looking building in a neighboring block.
- Olivia, look, it is the Empire State Building! Shall we climb on top of it to see what the city looks from bird perspective like? Alberto urged.
- No - we will take an elevator to the top instead, I replied.

Well, that was easier said than done. There was an elevator in the building that was taking people to the observation deck high above everything else, but before we could get there, we spent a good while queuing in and in the security control. And then we met someone who had made a brief visit to the top of the building before us...

Alberto voiced his doubts if the visit to the top was a good idea after all - we had been to observation decks before and all we had seen were just the roofs of the nearby houses. Well, this time his worries were way premature, as the views from the top of the Empire State Building were extraordinary. Alberto was photographing so enthusiastically that I had to drag him back down again so that we would keep up our schedule.

However, that was not our only encounter with tall buildings that day. A bit further down in the south we saw the very peculiar Flatiron Building.
- It really looks like an flatiron, Alberto stated.
- Yeah, but it is way too big for even a giant, I replied.
- Don't worry, the next thing we are going to see is something small and homely, Alberto said cryptically.

Well, I should have guessed what he meant: Little Italy. And he was right, it really was like being home in Italy. As it was again well past the lunch time, we stopped by the famous Italian cafe Ferrara for a coffee break and to rest our paws. There were so many goodies to choose from but after a while I settled with New York style cheese cake where as Alberto chose more Italian way and had a cannoli.

Little Italy is surrounded by the Chinatown, which made it quite adventurous to move around. The changes from one milieu to other were rapid: first you were walking among Italian restaurants and shops on one street, turned around the corner and found yourself in the middle of Hongkong! We entered deeper to the Chinatown for a while until we encountered something scary.
- I think we should not take this road any longer but turn back, I said.
- Why? Alberto asked.
- This corner is known as Bloody Angle, as the gangsters ambushed each other here!
- And when did that happen?
- In 1920s...
- Well, I guess that the gangsters have most likely moved on already a long time ago, Alberto soothed me.

With a little bit of encouraging from Alberto I finally dared to walk around the corner. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed when I didn't discover any gangsters there. I did, however, discover a lot of little shops that were selling fish and every other kind of sea food one could imagine.

After exploring the Chinatown for a while, it was time to move on to the other side of Manhattan to visit the memorial of the 2001 World Trade Center terrorist attack. It was a bit difficult to get there in the first place, as the memorial ground is enclosed by huge construction sites - the work for new One World Trade Center skyscraper was already well on its way. After some walking and passing through another security check we finally were able to enter the memorial park. It quickly became clear to us that in a few years time there will be a very cozy and peaceful memorial for this tragic and sorrowful incident. We are quite sure that the mourning friends and relatives will find the peace from here.

The places of the fallen WTC towers were now occupied by two huge pools with waterfalls. Around the pools there were plates with the names of those who perished that horrible day and in the previous terrorist attack on the WTC grounds in 1993. There was also a touching testament for hope for a better tomorrow: the Survivor Tree. It is a callery pear tree that survived the September 11th attack and was recovered from the ruins, albeit in a very bad shape. Despite the damage, the tree was nursed back to health and was replanted back on the WTC grounds in December 2010.

The evening was already falling and we had to leave the 9/11 Memorial as we were going to meet Alberto's friend Bill over a dinner in a Vietnamese restaurant in Tribeca. Alberto was excited, as even if he had been corresponding with Bill for more than a decade, he had never met him in person. Needless to say, these two had a lot to discuss when we finally sat down around the table. And it was equally unsurprising to learn how they had come to know each other - that had happened on a Led Zeppelin forum in the Internet.

After the dinner Bill had to go home but before he left, he recommended us the nearby Tribeca Grill - that is co-owned by Robert De Niro himself - as a good bar to try our the famous Manhattan cocktail. We took his advice and went to try out that popular drink. In addition to the cocktail we also got a taste of legendary skill and wit of a real Manhattan bar tender. Among other things he kindly told us the story about how the Manhattan cocktail came to be. Raising our glasses and drinking to that was a suitable conclusion for the day we saw most of that famous island in the heart of New York City.
