- Freija valittiin koulussa Luciaksi...

Have a nice day of St. Lucy!

It has been a tradition that the daughter of our neighbors, Victoria Björhufvud, will visit us to sing the song of St. Lucy every year on December 13th. This time she had her friend Freya with her, clad all black and having a laurel on her head.

- Are you a maid of St. Lucy, too? I asked from Freya.
- Freya was elected as the maid in our school this year... started Victoria to explain.
- ...but I delegated the maidenship to Victoria, completed Freya.
- But why on earth? I was wondering.
- I had some disagreement with our teacher about the costume of St. Lucy. She said I should wear a white gown but I didn't like that idea too much. So, my sisters Goth and Tic quickly made a robe that suits my personal style so that I could accompany Victoria when she was going to come and sing for you.
- Ok, I see, I said, thinking that dressing really is not a thing to compromise.

Victoria and Freya proceeded singing their song which was this time not only enjoyed by our household but also Ms. Pupu who happened to be visiting us. And like in previous years, the maids of St. Lucy were rewarded with some pralines and julmust, the wonderful Christmas drink we had brought from Sweden.

I wish everybody a nice day of St. Lucy!

From the flea market to the church

After hosting Roberto and his offspring and enjoying the weekend of musical mayhem, the idea of having a short vacation abroad started to become more and more tempting. However, as I mentioned before, our fiscal situation pretty much ditched all such dreams. As desperate times call for desperate measures, we decided to try to sell some of our stuff in a local second hand store. After doing some serious digging at the attic we did find a good selection of goodies for our table. In addition to this, Alberto got a stash of old vinyl LPs for sale. We were quite happy to discover that our attempt to cash at the flea market was quite a success. After selling some 100 LPs and a good number of our own stuff on good price, we calculated that our vacation dreams could become true after all.

However, before going anywhere, there were still quite a lot to do – like going to attend a concert in the newest church here in Jyväskylä. The church in Kuokkala was inaugurated less than two years ago and we had not been there before. Sporting rather modern external appearance, the church itself proved to be rather warm and cozy place inside. I like old churches very much and usually prefer them to their modern cousins, but this time I fell in love immediately. The wooden panels seemed to brought the air of agelessness to the church interiors and the wooden vault definitely reminded me of all those medieval stone churches we have seen over the past few years.

But of course we didn't go there to see the church only. The main reason was the charity concert by Alberto's friend Jarkko Martikainen that was arranged there – we decided to go after Alberto had ensured from Jarkko that he will play some Christmas tunes as part of his repertoire. After the show we went to meet and greet Jarkko.
- I just figured out that this was the first time I have bought tickets to your gig, Alberto opened the conversation.
- Come on now, old boy, there is nothing wrong about it this time, as the revenue goes to charity, was Jarkko's poignant answer.

The day following the concert was the Advent Sunday so Alberto decided it was high time to start to steer the household menu towards the Christmas flavors, like the good old rice porridge. The Christmas spirits were augmented also by the first snow that fell later in the week. Alberto was anxiously photographing the snowy trees and the snowmen that appeared around the neighborhood.

Too bad it didn't take long for the snow to melt – but our dream about a vacation didn't. With the money earned from the flea market, we managed to get ourselves to Stockholm again. There is no snow here either this time and we do hope that the rain will be over by the time when we're about head to Skansen Christmas fair...
